UK Folkboat Association AGM Chairman’s Report - Matthew Jones
As I reach the end of my term as chairman of the Folkboat Association I would like to
review the last year: Folkboat sailors both Cruisers and Racers again enjoyed a good
year in 2017.While personally we had delayed start due to crew injuries, the class
enjoyed the usual great events:
• The RTI where conditions were much better than the previous year and in the
Folkboat Class Stralende came first, followed by Padfoot and YSA.
• The Royal Solent hosted the 10th Taittinger Regatta attracting an entry of 18
Folkboats with Padfoot coming first followed by Svane and Pilgrim.
• The highlight of the year is always Folkboat Week, again hosted by the Royal
Solent and sponsored by Lymington Yacht Haven. This had 20 boats in the
Open division and 8 in the Classic division. Stralende won the Open and
Folkdance the Classic.
• The Nordic Folkboat Nationals where held at Royal Lymington YC and 14
boats entered. Madelaine won overall followed by Crackerjack and Tak. As
well as these larger events the Western Solent saw the usual well attended
Spring and Winter series, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday
afternoon series. All in all, plenty of events to choose from.
Further afield Ed Donald and Simon Osgood with respective crews went to 75th
Folkboat Gold Cup in Kerteminde, they all thought it was a great experience, this
year it is being held in Sweden. Julian and Claire Sowry with Doug Neville-Jones
represented the UK at the San Francisco International Regatta coming a creditable
8th overall with one 1st place.
We have a new committee member, Phil Jenkins, who is organising events for the
Classic Folkboats in the form of cruising meets and it is hoped that these will be well
supported, some Nordics have even asked to be invited.
