6. Patching
All of the corner reinforcements have
been cut out by the laser at the same
time as the sail was cut. These are now
glued together with double sided tape,
applied to the sail and stitched in place.
The next process is the addition of the
tapes; these are stapled into position
to ensure the correct tension and then
stitched. Finally the batten pockets and
windows are added where indicated by
the lines applied by the plotter.
7. Hand Finishing
It is amazing how much ‘handwork’ is still
required to complete a set of Folkboat
sails! The headboard has to be riveted in
place, the corner eyes have to be pressed
into positon or stitched on; the battens
have to be cut to size, the Folkboat logo
applied, along with the sail numbers,
camber lines and stencilling the sail bag.

inspection and the bolt rope is piped in tightly to fit inside the grove of the mast.
8. Measuring
When the sail is complete, it is measured by one of our ‘measurers’ to check that
everything is class legal. If it is then the class button is fitted and the Sanders Sails
declaration attached. The sail is then rolled up very carefully and put in to her new
sail bag where she is carefully stored ready for its lucky owner to take out sailing and
hopefully win some races too!
