M
aking the perfect suit of folkboat sails is no easy task
and to make sure we fulfil your unique specifications
we break the sail making process down into 8 steps,
which are carried out by individual sailmakers making
sure our exceptionally high standards are maintained
throughout.
1. Measurement
The size of the sails is governed by the class rules,
which are regularly reviewed to ensure that there are
no loopholes that the Sailmaker can exploit and to make
changes if deemed necessary. This has recently meant
a change to the length of the battens.
Over the last 42 years we have refined our designs and
annually (if not more regularly) made minor changes
to continue our quest for the perfect sail. It is possible
to make a ‘standard’ set of sails and modify the rig to
suit them, but due to the inconsistency of the wooden
spars, we prefer to measure each Nordic Folkboat that
we make sails for (if possible). This not only means that
we can check the mast bend, but it also gives us an
opportunity to make sure that the jib tracks are where
they should be.
2. Designs
We use the very latest sail design software from ‘SMAR Azure’ to enable us to ‘build
the rig’ on screen virtually and then add to this the dimensions of the sails from the
class rules where they can refined with the details obtained from measuring the yacht.
We retain the ‘moulds’ of all the sails that we have made in a database and therefore
can recall any of them at a moment’s notice and either, cut the same sail again or if
required, use this mould as a starting point for a new design.
Once the designs have been finalised we select
width (36” in the case of the Folkboat) and lay th
the computer created moulds. Once complete the panels
are removed from the ‘virtual’ mould and ‘nest
the sail cloth ensuring that the weft and warp
correctly aligned: both of these processes take seconds.
This information is then passed to the laser cutter.
